Nine pianists, six grand pianos, works by Reich, Cage and Shostakovich, and a world premiere.

(Toronto)—
Soundstreams continues its 30th anniversary season with Piano Ecstasy at Koerner Hall on April 26 at 8:00 pm. A celebration of music for multiple pianos, this concert features nine virtuoso Canadian pianists, six grand pianos, works by Steve Reich, John Cage, Dmitri Shostakovich, Witold Lutoslawski, and Colin McPhee, and the world premiere of Glenn Buhr’s Two Pieces for Three Pianos.

The nine featured pianists from across Canada are James Parker (Gryphon Trio), Christina Petrowska Quilico, Russell Hartenberger (NEXUS), Serouj Kradjian (Amici Chamber Ensemble), Gregory Oh and Simon Docking (Toca Loca), Chris Donnelly, Tania Gill, and Glenn Buhr. They will perform together in various configurations throughout the evening in a dazzling display of technique and versatility.

Opening the concert are John Cage’s The Beatles 1962-1970, where six pianists simultaneously play snippets of dozens of Beatles songs, Shostakovich’s cheerful Concertino for Two Pianos, Op. 94, Lutoslawski’s delightful Variation on a Theme of Paganini for Two Pianos, and the gamelan-inspired Balinese Ceremonial Music by Canadian composer Colin McPhee.

The second half of the evening features the world premiere of Waterloo-based composer Glenn Buhr’s Two Pieces for Three Pianos and culminates with Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Steve Reich’s minimalist masterpiece, Six Pianos.
