NEW YORK CITY -
Performance composer Sxip Shirey brings his mutant harmonicas, red marbles, glass bowls, industrial flutes, resophonic guitar and other sonic wonders back to Joe's Pub on January 7th. This performance comes right on the heels of grabbing national attention by receiving a grant from the U.S. Artists Fellowship of $50,000 along with 49 of his talented peers. This recognition marks a change in Sxip’s career from the New York City underground and international touring artist to being more widely recognized figure in the art community.

For this rare Sxip Shirey performance at Joe’s Pub, special guests are to include Columbian legend Lucia Pulido (pictured below) singing in English for the first time, digital violist Todd Reynolds, members of Luminescent Orchestrii, trumpet player Sony Sign, percussionist Michael Calabrese, young new music curator and cellist Valerie Kuehne, and glass harmonica player Jonathan Rodgers.

Neil Gaiman of the Wall Street Journal writes, “Sxip fascinates me.  His music sounds like stories… he works in the places where noise becomes music and does things that make you realize there are no boundaries between noise and music – or not like you imagine.”

This ever evolving artist has played exploding circus organ for the pyro-technic clowns of the Daredevil Opera Company at the Sydney Opera House and the Kennedy Center, industrial flutes for acrobats on mechanical jumping boots at The New Victory Theater on Broadway, Appalachian music for gypsies in Transylvania and gypsy music for Appalachians in West Virginia and has had had audiences dancing at underground parties in NYC to mutant harmonicas for 10 years. Anything is possible as long as Sxip Shirey is involved.
