Let's face it, there's nothing better than drinking and eating your way out of the mid-winter doldrums. Icewine is a personal favourite - rich and sweet but not cloying like sugary liqueurs. It's a type of wine that can only be produced in a very few regions of the world where wine grapes can grow - and where temperatures in the winter reach below -9 Celsius. The grapes are left on the vine to continue to mature and ripen until the temperatures hit that low - typically in January or late December and the result retains the fruit's inherent sugars. Sweet, yes, but sweet like the fruit itself and not sugary.
The Niagara Region is one of the lucky places to experience those extremes in climate and have the soil for wine grapes. For three weekends in January, the Niagara Region is transformed into a wintry wonderland, celebrating one of Canada’s most cherished products - Ontario Icewine. From Gala evening toasts to chestnut roasts, ornate ice bars, ice skating and winery tours, the 21st Annual Niagara Icewine Festival offers plenty for every taste.
