Singer songwriter Maxwell James' eponymous debut EP is a high energy collection of songs that you could loosely put into the contemporary Americana slot. Maxwell is a native of Nashville, TN, where it sounds like he belongs.

His verison of country/Americana is infused with a funky rhythmic heart in Roll Down Your Window Slowly. It revolves around a driving beat, with an inventive sense of instrumentation and phrasing to add to the effect.

Feed My Evolution is slow yet relentless, with a rising and falling tension that drives the song. Growling guitars contrast with churchy organ chords. Maxwell's tenor has a nicely raspy edge that gives it character.
What can I say when I know that I'll be wrong?
His lyrics are clever, giving country a poetic makeover with an ironic sense of humour in The More You Say; The Less I Know. The tracks offer a variety of styles and genres, including the rootsy Blatantly and a slow country waltz in When It's Real.
