The Holy Gasp: In Amsterdam

Lush orchestral pop with a relatable message and jazzy hooks - that's the appeal of In Amsterdam, the latest single from Toronto-based Holy Gasp.

Vocalist Benjamin Hackman sings about a twisted family dynamics and existential crisis in an expressive style that plays it straight with the music, even in comedic lines. Underneath, guitars play, strings swell underneath the chorus, and the brass add emotional colour. It's music that you think sounds familiar, but then veers somewhere unexpected. That's kind of their trademark.

Holy Gasp is an eclectic ensemble founded by poet and composer Benjamin Hackman in 2011. The new single In Amsterdam continues in a tradition of entertaining music that tells a story.

If you're in the Toronto area, you can look for live performances that combine music, theatrical performance art, and Gestalt therapy in Kensington Market every other Thursday evening at Cafe Pamenar
