Harbourfront Centre NextSteps 2012/13 Season
presents an incredible spectrum of Canadian dance
Winter 2013 - from January to May 2013

TORONTO, ON –
Harbourfront Centre is pleased to announce the 2012/13 season of contemporary dance series, NextSteps. Running from September 2012 to May 2013, NextSteps features 24 companies, each one showcasing a diverse spectrum of dance from Toronto and beyond.

For almost 30 years, Harbourfront Centre has been passionate about dance and the seventh season of Harbourfront Centre NextSteps reflects that zeal with Flamenco, hip-hop, contemporary, Afro-Caribbean and Indigenous dance.

Winnipeg’s Contemporary Dancers
Toward Light: A Tribute to Rachel Browne

Twenty-one dancers take to the stage as Winnipeg’s Contemporary Dancers (WCD) honours their beloved founder, Rachel Browne, by remounting nine of her signature works from 1964 through 2012. Her work has influenced generations of dancers whom she has trained and directed, and as the founding artistic director of WCD, she also gave numerous choreographers a place to develop and mount their works. Rachel Browne passed away at the age of 77 while in attendance this summer at the 2012 Canada Dance Festival. Toward Light is a loving tribute to this icon of Canadian modern dance.

dance Immersion - Tribute (A Moving History of Canadian Blacks in Dance)

An unforgettable night that celebrates the history, artistry and contributions made by Canadian blacks in dance in a multidisciplinary presentation of movement, film and spoken word. The programme includes presentations by Compagnie Danse and Nyata Nyata, and remounts by Ronald Taylor Dance, Tamla Matthews, Learie McNicolls and Danny Grossman.

DanceWorks DW198 La Otra Orilla - Homoblablatus
Feb.14-16, 2013 (Enwave Theatre)

Montreal’s La Otra Orilla takes Flamenco into the 21st century with a dynamic collaboration between dancer/choreographer Myriam Allard and the soulful live singing of Hedi Graja. Their DanceWorks production, El12, received a Dora Mavor Moore Award nomination for Outstanding Dance Production in 2010.

DanceWorks DW199: Wen Wei Dance – New Work

Choreographed by Wen Wei Wang to original music by Giorgio Magnanensi and lit by James Proudfoot, six dancers display uninhibited abandon and controlled precision as they explore control versus autonomy and dominance versus obedience through our relationship to animals. The full-length work about the seldom achieved unconditional love is a much-anticipated follow-up to his stunning Cock-Pit, previously presented by DanceWorks at NextSteps 09/10.



Belinda McGuire – The Heist Project

The Heist Project, a one-woman dance event, premieres three commissioned works created by five international artists, conceived and performed by Jóse Limón Dance Company member, Belinda McGuire. The Eight Propositions is a collaboration between Emio Greco, Pieter C. Scholten (Amsterdam) and McGuire (with original music by Jerome Begin); Anthem for the Living is by Sharon Moore (Toronto); and Blue Solo, by Idan Sharabi (Tel Aviv). In creating The Heist Project, McGuire traveled around the world creating and collecting the solos, all built on spontaneity and reactivity.

Kalanidhi Fine Arts of Canada - A Celebration of Kalanidhi Fine Arts

Artistic director Sudha Khandwani marks 20 years of presenting landmark festivals and conferences in Canada that feature the finest classical and contemporary Indian dance artists from around the world. Join us for the North American premiere of the internationally acclaimed Samudra dance troupe and California's Amprapali Ambegaonkar's breath-taking Kathak dance, along with recent works by Nova Dance, inDANCE, Menaka Thakkar Dance Company, and Panwar Music and Dance.

Ballet Creole - RIVER
Apr. 4-6, 2013 (Fleck Dance Theatre)

Now in its 23rd year, Ballet Creole presents RIVER, a conceptual take on the idea that nothing can stop a river flowing. Two aesthetically diverse dance pieces will flow onto the stage: Patrick Parson will complete Trouchka, a work that began in May 2009 as part of a performance of Petrouchka with the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra. Associate choreographer Gabby Kamino will perform the Canadian premiere of Fallen Angels, a three-part allegorical piece which depicts angels that have “fallen” or, rather, angels that have chosen to live as humans.

DanceWorks DW200: Nova Dance and Louis Laberge-Côté - Akshongay

Akshongay (together), created and performed by Nova Bhattacharya and Louis Laberge-Côté, gives voice to the powerful, shared artistic vision of this unique duo. Bhattacharya and Laberge-Côté celebrate the power and beauty of abstraction and the transformative experience they have undergone in their creative relationship over the last decade. Sunil Kothari (Narthaki, India) praised Akshongay for its “sheer brilliance and innovation.”

DanceWorks DW201 Compagnie Flak - Vilanelle & S
Apr. 19-20, 2013 (Fleck Dance Theatre)

Created by José Navas, a tender solo, Vilanelle, sets the stage for S when eight dancers, stunning in their vulnerability, present choreography structured like a musical score, likening these men and women to instruments crafted by Stradivarius. From Japanese Butoh to Turkish whirling, this world-class festival presents exceptional contemporary and traditional dance inspired by Asian ideas and exprssions. Kaeja d’Dance - X-ODUS & Crave

X-ODUS and Crave, a new double-bill, probes unsettled solitude and the attempt to reconnect – performed by seven gifted dancers in the Kaeja’s distinctive hyper-physical, sensual and raw styles. Established in 1991, Toronto’s Kaeja d’Dance creates award-winning contemporary dance performances, site works with extreme numbers of dancers, acclaimed screen dance and in-demand education and outreach programs. Living fully at the heart of Kaeja are co-artistic directors Karen and Allen Kaeja. They break ground, take risks and bring together exquisite dancers and collaborators to infuse extraordinary experience both on and off the stage in local and international communities.

Canadian Contemporary Dance Theatre - Vector[s]

Six contemporary choreographies tracing six compelling lifelines converge in this dynamic, young company’s presentation of Vector[s], featuring premieres by award-winning choreographer and former José Limón Dance Company dancer, Colin Connor (his fourth CCDT premiere in four years), and England’s Alexander Whitley of Wayne McGregor | Random Dance, whose commissions include Solo? for the Rambert Dance Company. Returning from acclaimed debuts in 2012, Sylvie Bouchard’s L’envol, Deborah Lundmark’s McAskill Crescent and Connor’s Breath of Rivers, in a programme sure to entrance every age and taste.
