CD Review: Jared Weiss - Isolated Thunderstorms (Independent - May 21, 2018)

CD Review: Jared Weiss - Isolated Thunderstorms (Independent - May 21, 2018) • Stream it on Spotify • Buy the CD Listening to his polished tenor on this release, it's no surprise to find that Jared Weiss is a veteran of the Off-Broadway musical theatre scene both in his native Manhattan and in regional theatre, with a BMus in vocal performance from NYU. The songs, all penned by Jared, feature clever lyrics, delivered in a smooth tenor that sounds effortless. Interesting harmonies and a variety of approaches showcase his talents with an underlying theme of personal reflection. From a media release, "Isolated Thunderstorms is an auto-biographical confessional, born out of a life or death need to tell the truth. I threw away the love of my life because I was too sick to care. My mind was warped. I hit rock bottom. What choices did I make to get me to this place of isolation? I order to re-examine the tragic, macabre moments of my life, I first had to embrace them. I don

CD Review: Taylor James - Insane (Heart of Gold Music, LLC)

CD Review: Taylor James - Insane (Heart of Gold Music, LLC December 2, 2017) • Stream it on Spotify • Buy it on iTunes If you like RnB, soul, and gospel in classic style, with lush arrangements that showcase soulful vocals, Taylor James is your man. A native of West Central Mississippi, Taylor began his musical career at 15. Insane is characterized by earworm melodies and polished vocal facility - Taylor can easily manage all the fluid acrobatics of the genre but in a way that still feels genuine and not simply vocal pyrotechnics. As a songwriter, his lyrics cover the usual romantic territory with a soft edge of true love and all its pleasures. Say It's Me has a nice bouncey vibe, with classic boy group harmonies on the chorus. The music has a timeless quality - not what you'd call retro, while still in the musical tradition. Say It's Me is melodic, with nuanced vocals, and complex rhythms that elevate the typical drum machine sound. Insane, the title track, is

Country/Americana/Folk Maxwell James - Maxwell James (Independent, Mar 22, 2018) • Stream it on Spotify Singer songwriter Maxwell James' eponymous debut EP is a high energy collection of songs that you could loosely put into the contemporary Americana slot. Maxwell is a native of Nashville, TN, where it sounds like he belongs. His verison of country/Americana is infused with a funky rhythmic heart in Roll Down Your Window Slowly. It revolves around a driving beat, with an inventive sense of instrumentation and phrasing to add to the effect. Feed My Evolution is slow yet relentless, with a rising and falling tension that drives the song. Growling guitars contrast with churchy organ chords. Maxwell's tenor has a nicely raspy edge that gives it character. What can I say when I know that I'll be wrong? His lyrics are clever, giving country a poetic makeover with an ironic sense of humour in The More You Say; The Less I Know. The tracks offer a variety of styles an
